A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Blu-Ray Edition
by Heather Wixson

Directed by Wes Craven

Starring Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, John Saxon, Ronee Blakely

When A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET first was released almost 3 decades ago, it reinvigorated the entire horror genre and its far-reaching influences have been felt worldwide ever since.  Now, one of horror's favorite bad guys ever, Freddy Krueger, along with his original batch of victims are getting their due with the release of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET onto the Blu-Ray format.

If you're reading a horror website, I think it's a pretty safe bet that you're familiar with Wes Craven's original slasher masterpiece, so a lot of this review will focus on the special features since they are plentiful.

The transfer of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET looks amazing on the Blu format.  This is no GHOSTBUSTERS job.  The picture is crisp and personally, I think it looks better than any version I have ever seen since my first time taking a trip down Elm Street when I was around 8 years old.  This is a must-have for any fan, regardless if they even end up doing the box set of all the NIGHTMARE films down the road.

In terms of special features, fans get really spoiled with the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Blu-Ray.  I played the trivia track which offered up some fun tidbits for the anyone who enjoys the original.  The alternate endings were pretty basic but the one that is at the end (I won't spoil it) was pretty killer and I would love to see that ending one day incorporated into the regular version just to see if it plays as well as I think it does.

Both commentary tracks were chockfull of great stories but I think I enjoyed the version with Craven, Heather Langenkamp, Sara Risher, Robert Englund, Robert Shaye, and Ronee Blakely just a little bit more than the one with just Craven, Langenkamp, John Saxon, and the Director of Photography Jacques Haitkin.  It had a lot of great behind-the-scene stories that really went along well with the film.

All three featurettes ("The House That Freddy Built," "Never Sleep Again," and "Night Terrors") were pretty sweet.  "The House That Freddy Built" explored just how the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET changed New Line Cinema and positioned them for future projects, including the award-winning THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY.  I rather enjoyed hearing where Craven got his NIGHTMARE inspirations in "Night Terrors" but the "Never Sleep Again" featurette really brought home the bacon.  Die-hards will love this inside look behind their favorite genre flick.

The reality is that most horror fans will be buying the Blu-Ray for A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET when it streets on April 13th so my review won't really persuade that many people.  But allow me to give you fans some reassurance- your money will be well spent on this brilliant new transfer of the film that kicked off one of the horror genre's most beloved franchises.

Film: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Bonus Features: 4 out of 5 stars
