Doug Sakmann Director of Evil Head
Currently Doug Sakmann is working on bringing us the film: Evil Head, a porn and horror homage to the Evil Dead series. He was kind enough to answer a few questions about the film and his career and for that I thank him. Also it should be noted that any Evil Head photos that may be attached to this article were created by Hadas. Be sure to check out www.evilhead.com and Doug also gave me this information: “As you may know, “Re-Penetrator” won an AVN Award for Most Outrageous Sex Scene, and it was just announced yesterday that “The XXXorcist” is nominated for 2 AVNs at the 2008 Awards, Most Outrageous Sex Scene and Best Special Effects! Both films are also coming out in a softcore box set edition from Halo 8 Distribution (www.halo8.tv) in February, and the same company is releasing Punk Rock Holocaust 2 on DVD on Jan 30th! There is more information on all the films at www.iamanevilcarrot.com as well!”
Now, enough with my lazy copy and pasting and on with the interview: TERRORTUBE: Have you ever had contact with the filmmakers involved with the projects you spoofed? “I met Stewart Gordon at a Horror Convention and he told me he loved Re-Penetrator…I actually signed an autograph for him, so that was awesome! I heard that Brian Yuzna also likes it, Tommy Pistol (the lead actor in both Re-Penetrator and The XXXorcist) met him at a signing and he was into it. One of our fans asked Jeffery Combs (who plays Herbert West in Re-Animator) at a convention what he thought and Combs said that although he had never seen it, he did not “care for” the idea of Re-Animator being a porno. I think he may like it if he watches it…maybe he has but he’s too embarrassed to tell!” TERROR: Do you have to get special legal rights to make a film such as Evil Head, or have you changed all of the names and such just perfectly? “I think if it’s obviously a parody, as long as the content is all new and you are not stealing directly from the original content (using the same exact music or even clips from the movies) you are pretty safe. We’ve never gotten specific clearance from filmmakers to do these parodies, we see them more of a homage than a spoof. The reason we are doing our unique take of these classic films is out of respect for the filmmakers and the original stories.” TERROR: Will Evil Head take elements from all three films that starred Ash? "Evil Head will actually contain elements from Evil Dead 1 & 2, we are not going to be getting into medieval times. While I like Army of Darkness, I think it is a different movie than the first two films. We’re going to have characters from both films, there will be about 12 characters in the film and it will be over 2 and ½ hours long, it’s going to be the Ultimate Experience in Sexual Terror! Evil Head is going to include all the tree rape and chainsaw sex you didn’t see in the original classic.” TERROR: So, is there going to be more porno or more horror action in the final cut of Evil Head? “My first horror-porno, “Re-Penetrator” was more of a porno with horror elements, and with “The XXXorcist” I tried to include a lot more horror, there is more of a plot. With “Evil Head” I want to find a good balance, so it truly is a horror movie, but when it comes to the sex scenes you see full blown pornography. There will be a LOT of blood and gore; I promise you that.... it will have more than enough sex and violence!” TERROR: More sexy or funny? “It’s going to be equal parts sexy and funny, but over all it will be very disgusting too!” TERROR: Is this a “hardcore” flick? “Total hardcore, you're gonna see everything and then some.” TERROR: At what stage of production is Evil Head currently? “We are in the early stages of pre-production right now, we are working on the final financing and shooting schedule. We did shoot a teaser and did a photo shoot last month so we could do costume tests and such and everything looks better than expected! Now we just have to find the location where we are going to build the cabin from the ground up! We have a number of locations in mind but are trying to figure out where will be the most cost effective now.” TERROR: “Punk Rock Holocaust” was filmed using the Vans warped tour, how did you get such a project to work? “Punk Rock Holocaust was my first feature film after working for Troma Entertainment for 4 years. I had left Troma to start my own production company with some friends called Backseat Conceptions, and I was looking to direct my first feature film. We had worked with the Warped Tour and Kevin Lyman for a few years already, so when we decided to do a horror movie it just came together. I used everything I learned from Lloyd Kaufman and Troma to put together every aspect, we had the full support of the tour and all the bands on it so that helped a lot. We toured with the 2003 Warped Tour in our school bus and shot every day of the tour. It was a LOT of work, but we had such an awesome experience that we shot a sequel on the 2004-2006 Warped Tours. Punk Rock Holocaust 2 is in limited theatrical release now and will arrive on DVD on January 30th; you can get more info at www.punkrockholocaust.com! We are in development on a third film as well now!” TERROR: Where did you learn filmmaking? “I actually had no formal filmmaking experience before I started working at Troma, outside of shooting stupid little movies with my friends on a VHS camcorder growing up. I was trying to find work as an actor, and had done a few minor projects when I got a role in the 4th Toxic Avenger movie, Citizen Toxie. It was unlike any other film set experience I had before, so I started working behind the scenes for free on the entire movie. I guess I learned so much that Lloyd Kaufman asked me to come work for him, and shortly afterwards I became the Head of Production there. I essentially learned everything I know from working with Lloyd and all the other productions and companies I have over the years. Hands-on experience is the best way to learn, at least in my case. I always hated school and never had a desire to go to college, once I graduated High School I set out to do what I wanted to do, and now I am doing it!” TERROR: What would sum up or briefly describe your style or philosophy when it comes to shooting a film? “Basically whatever it takes to get it done, you have to do it yourself. If you don’t, no one will do it for you. I’ve worked on productions where the filmmaker has the right spirit in what he or she is doing, but not the true desire to see it all the way through. I’ve worked on feature films that were complete shot only to sit in a box never to be seen because the filmmaker didn’t have the drive to see it through to the end. I swore that I would never have that happen to any of my personal projects, so I work on every aspect of it until it’s done. Never leave your work for someone else to do because it won’t get done. In the off-chance it does get done, odds are it probably won’t be the way you want it to be. I hate to sound so pessimistic, but if you are making a movie you’ll find it’s true more often than not.” TERROR: Do you envision there will be many more porn spoofs of horror films in your future? “I have a lot of concepts for porno parodies, both horror related and otherwise. It’s easy to parody pretty much anything, but I am really specific about the ones I pick to do. It’s got to be something that I feel really strongly about, a movie that means something to me. And even then there are some things that I would not make the character do, because it is out-of-character for them. For instance, it was suggested that I make Freddy Kruger a transvestite in a Nightmare on Elm Street parody. That is something I would never do because I feel it would be an insult to the character of Freddy, and the people that made that film. I do the parodies out of respect of the original material. With that said, we plan on doing a Friday the 13th parody; one title that we came up with was Thursday the 12th: Jason Comes Early! But we have to get through Evil Head first, for more information stay tuned to www.evilhead.com!” TERROR: Finally, rap stars are always getting more attention for starting a “beef”, any filmmakers or movies out there that you want to go on the record as saying they suck? “I’m a pretty nice guy and I get along with pretty much everyone…there are a few people that get under my skin sometimes, but there’s an old saying my mom used to say “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. However, since you asked, I do have one person I would like to go on record as saying they suck BIG TIME; Tony from Victory Records. To make a long story short, we wanted to license a River City Rebels song from Victory for Punk Rock Holocaust 2. The band gave us permission to record a live version of a song and use it for free, so we shot them on the 2004 tour and included them in the movie. However, Victory owner Tony Brummel owns the rights to the song and would not allow it. We tried negotiating with him for 3 YEARS because is he is so bad about getting back to people. I have worked with over 36 bands on the Punk Rock Holocaust series, and licensed a good deal of music from all kinds of bands in my eight years of production work. I have never been treated so unprofessionally and arrogantly in all my life as when dealing with Tony. He does not care about the bands at all, only about how much money goes in his pocket. Though the band would not even see any money from it because he doesn’t pay royalties, we tried to negotiate with him but he was a huge dick about it. In the end, we were forced to record a new song which was written by Hick, Nick and Jew (of the dead) (the band who created the scores to the Punk Rock Holocaust series and most of our other productions). I sung the lyrics and we synced it up with their scene in the movie. The song is called “No Easy Way out of a Contract” and the lyrics talk about our shitty dealing with Victory, it’s pretty funny. I had been hearing for years about how badly Victory Records treats their bands and how bad it was to deal with them, but I had no idea until I dealt with Tony first hand. No offense to the people that work there, it’s not their fault, but Tony and Victory Records sucks!” |
