FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER
FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING
FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON LIVES

By Heather Wixson

Horror fans, most likely by now you've seen the entire FRIDAY THE 13TH series of films so I am not going to bore you with recaps of movies that have existed for over 20 years now.  Honestly, there isn't much that I would be able to tell you in terms of plot of the new Deluxe Editions of Parts 4-6 that you wouldn't be familiar with already.  Paramount has been issuing new "prettier" versions of the Jason Voorhees saga due to the resurgence in popularity of Camp Crystal Lakes most infamous resident and the recent remake.

Deluxe Editions of the first three films came out a few months ago and while it was nice to get cleaner versions, the discs didn't offer up a lot of new stuff for the fans.  This time around, for what fans like to call the "Tommy Jarvis Trilogy," Paramount gave free reign over their vaults to producer Dan Farrands and Andrew Kasch who certainly delivered the goodies for fans.

All three restored versions look a lot cleaner than the previously released DVD versions and here's a breakdown of all the extras for each disc.

THE FINAL CHAPTER:
  • Commentary with director Joe Zito, screenwriter Barry Cohen, and editor Joel Goodman
  • Fan commentary by Adam Green and Joe Lynch
  • Lost Tales from Camp Blood- Part 4
  • Slashed Scenes
  • Jason's Unlucky Day: 25 Years After FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER
  • The Lost Ending
  • The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited Part 1
  • Jimmy's Dead Dance Moves
  • Original Theatrical Trail
A NEW BEGINNING:
  • Commentary by director/co-screenwriter Danny Steinmann with cast and crew
  • Lost Tales from Camp Blood- Part 5
  • The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited Part 2
  • New Beginnings: The Making of FRIDAY THE 13TH V: A NEW BEGINNING
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
JASON LIVES:
  • Commentary by director Tom McLoughlin with cast and crew
  • Lost Tales from Camp Blood- Part 6
  • The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited Part 3
  • Jason Lives: The Making of FRIDAY THE 13TH: PART VI
  • Meeting Mr. Voorhees
  • Slashed Scenes
  • Original Theatrical Teaser Trailer
These discs truly have a lot of long buried gems for the Voorhees fanatics out there.  The extras for THE FINAL CHAPTER truly are the highlight as the lost ending is really interesting to watch (the shots had never even been assembled before this DVD release) and the crowd-pleaser is really seeing an awkward Crispin Glover rocking an extra long scene of his kick ass dance moves.

The cherry on top of this particular collection is the insanely imaginative and entertaining "Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited" mockumentaries.  Each runs at about 10 minutes and examines the lore of Jason within the context of him existing in our reality.  There are some great cameos in the mocks as well.

Overall, Parts 4-6 are must haves for all horror fans.  Those involved with putting together the Deluxe Editions of these flicks should be highly commended for finally giving horror fans what they've been waiting for all these years.

Ratings:

THE FINAL CHAPTER:  4 out of 4
A NEW BEGINNING:  3 1/2 out of 4
JASON LIVES:  4 out of 4
