Fear Itself: Episode 1 Review

By Heather Wixson

Let me just say that I am generally a big fan of the Masters of Horror series on cable, so you can imagine that I was a bit skeptical when I heard that NBC was developing their own horror anthology, simply because I couldn’t imagine horror working within the confines of network TV.  So, I was cautiously optimistic when viewing the first episode of Fear Itself entitled The Sacrifice.

The Sacrifice tells the story of a few young men traveling through a remote area who end up getting stuck at a very “behind the times” farm (no running water, no electricity and certainly no Wi-Fi, which was a joke in the episode) where three young women live.  One of the young men traveling had been previously injured so he’s taken to a special room in the farm where one of the mysterious young women tends to his wounds and then stitches his mouth closed.  From there on out, we know that something is definitely going on at the farm that just isn’t normal.

I will admit, when the episode first started, I immediately started having flashbacks of that mess The Village and I thought “Oh come on, another group of people living in a different time within present day.” But once we saw the guys one by one becoming victims of the desperate village women and realized just what they were sacrificing the men for (I don’t do spoilers; you really should watch the episode to see what the “horror” aspect is for yourself), I was suddenly on board completely.

Penned by the legendary Mick Garris and directed by Breck Eisner (Sahara), The Sacrifice could have easily adapted well onto the big screen.  What I liked about the script itself is that sometimes you get these stories with dialogue that just truly never come out and say what they need to say and here, Garris doesn’t try to trick the audience.  We get the initial build-up of suspense and then find out just what our characters are dealing with.

The other highlight for me was the casting for the episode.  Rachel Milner (Tooth & Nail, Penny Dreadful) plays the main sister Chelsea and TV actor Jeffrey Pierce plays Point, the lead guy of the group who fights his way out of the compound.  One pleasant surprise for me was Jesse Plemmons as Lemon, Point’s brother, who is always a delight as Landry on NBC’s Friday Night Lights.

I was also surprised by the amount of gore that NBC allowed to air since it generally caters to the family viewing audience and I assumed they’d probably clean up what we were going to see (as reports have claimed that unedited versions of this and future episodes will be available when the series becomes available on DVD.

Fear Itself airs on Thursday nights at 10/9 CST.  Here’s hoping that the ratings hold up so that we have a chance to see the series in its entirety.  Turns out, there is room for horror on network TV.
