The horror movie Feast was the winner of Project Greenlight 3 and became a cult hit, thanks to its dark humor mixed with the bloodletting. Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds was directed by the same director and written by the same writers. Yes, John Gulager directed from a script by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. However, the same magic just wasn’t caught again.

Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds takes place immediately after the events in the first movie. Aside from a couple of the survivors from the first movie, you also get to follow an all girl biker gang and a couple of wrestler midgets as they try to survive in a small town under attack by many versions of the same beasts that attacked the bar in the first film. The survivor’s featured from the first movie are not the two leads you would expect, but rather the Bartender who managed to not perish from the heart attack, slashed jugular combo and Honey Pie, the blond who abandoned them all. Honey Pie, by the way, is still looking good and still getting splashed with excess amounts of blood.  The leader of the biker gang is also a familiar actress from the first movie, though she is playing the twin sister of the woman that lost a leg and then went boom in the first. Yep, she is out for revenge, fueling much of the plot (if you consider there to be plot) for this second feature.

Feast 2 felt like it was 89% filler material and 11% movie. There are long extended scenes of people sleeping and the overall pace was snail slow. The first movie was very energetic, even though it all took place in a single location (more or less) thus it is a real disappointment that given a bigger environment the filmmakers weren’t able to keep that fun pace alive. I really want to side with the filmmakers and give a little sympathy on this issue due to some clarification given in the director commentary of the DVD. It seems that Feast 2 ran into money problems and the fact that they were set to shoot it and Feast 3 back to back only furthered the problem. Instead of using the script for Feast 3 to make Feast 3, from what I understand, the script for Feast 2 was split into two movies. Therefore, there may not have actually been enough material to make Feast 2 and what I was seeing was indeed the deliberate stretching of things. This does not bode well for Feast 3.

Another huge problem with Feast 2 being split is the ending of Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds. There isn’t an ending! The first movie had actors being killed off one after the other. This is not the case in Feast 2 and it becomes more like a episode of some deranged, unrated show as opposed to a stand alone movie. I say this because all of the characters stick around more or less and the end is a cliffhanger. Right exactly when the action actually starts to happen and pick up: the end. See you next time.

Fans of the first movie will not be stopped in checking out this sequel; it was such a great first movie. However, my suggestion is that you wait for part 3 to be released before watching part 2. Otherwise you will be left hanging and unsatisfied. There are still some of those magical Feast moments present in the sequel and it is a shame that business got in the way of creativity. Some of the humor involving gratuitous gore and dark decisions to be made for survival really do make one laugh or cringe.

Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds lives up to its name as in being a sloppy sequel. Okay, the filmmakers did a decent job of putting it together, but what you get is a drag. Honey Pie from the original movie is the most interesting character and eye candy for the sequel, and though she is part of a running joke, I wish she had been given more screen time and opportunity to become the new heroine. Feast fans should wait to check this out and people who did not like Feast should skip it for sure. If you have not ever seen Feast: what are you waiting for? Just don’t rush to see Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds.
