Freezer Burn: The Invasion Of Laxdale is a Canadian made movie that came out on DVD without too much press. I had heard about it previously and thought it was a hockey movie, turns out one of the characters is an ex hockey player, but it is actually an alien invasion movie. And I think I actually liked it.
Freezer Burn stars Tom Green as the lead protagonist and Crispin Glover as the lead antagonist, with some support from Sarain Boylan as a romantic interest with a past. (well, I guess we all have a past) The movie was directed by Grant Harvey and tells the story of the small Canadian town of Laxdale. Weird crop circles have begun to appear and the desperate townsfolk turn to them to bring in tourist dollars. However, soon a Dutch Oil Company comes with promises to enrich the town with their new facility and that’s when the alien conspiracy really gets underway with people being toasted to death and other strange happenings. A disgruntled ex hockey player and a girl in a cut off shirt and short shorts come to the rescue! The first name most people will judge this movie by is Tom Green. Some people love him and some love to hate him. However, I can say that this is not the type of movie where he is running wild with hyper, over-the-top antics. He is a rather depressed alcoholic, ex-hockey player in this movie and thus keeps his attitude more subdued and sour. This doesn’t mean he loses his comedic charm at all. In fact the movie is funny. I was surprised and thought that I would be turning Freezer Burn off after a few minutes but indeed made it all the way to the end. Everyone else on the cast did a fine job, with Crispin Glover being his usual weird self taking on a role where the speaking parts are either in short accented phrases or not human language at all; he wiggles his fingers and there are sound effects. (note: that isn’t really a spoiler because you obviously know who the aliens are when the movie starts) Freezer Burn: The Invasion Of Laxdale was more hit than miss with the comedy. You really need to stick with it to get to the best gems of laughter, some simple things in the silly plot really made me laugh. If you are looking for mindless fun, this one is worth the rental risk for sure. Heck, I would buy it if it were at a cheaper price someday. Reviewer: Wes Laurie |
