Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street

Best line of the movie: “Every time someone farts around here I get calls from people wanting to know if there are ghosts.”

As Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street begins, it becomes quickly apparent that this will be a waste of my time. Immediately, the bad lighting and sound effects that are supposed to bring suspense to a scene of blood and mayhem fails to leave any sort of lasting impression beyond disbelief that I have to spend my time watching what’s to follow.

It’s October 27 and the haunted house called Slaughter on Second Street is preparing to open in the small town of Owensboro. Unfortunately, the teenaged volunteers who help make this haunted house a staple of the small town are murdered.

October 28 arrives and owner Buck Masters (Todd Reynolds) of the haunted house attraction is fielding calls from concerned citizens, telling him he needs to shut down as there is a ghost on the premises. His brother Damien (Bryan Reynolds) also is trying to shut down the attraction, a bonafide “cornerstone” of the town.

On All Hallow’s Eve, Buck decides to have paranormal investigators scope out the place to truly determine if there is an alleged phantom or ghost.

The only questions that you will be left with are: Is the haunted house truly haunted…no stage make-up and crappy props necessary? And if there IS a ghost, why is it there? Is the haunted house just another in a long line of scams driven by a money-hungry owner who wants to make his profits outlast his retirement?

Either way, Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street is a “must-miss” flick with anti-climactic death scenes composed of unrealistic blood, asinine acting (I assume there were actual classes taken based on the acting abilities, but perhaps more practice is needed), and somewhat poor writing.

First-time film director P.J. Starks and co-writer Rodney Newton make a valiant attempt at what seems to be a semi-decent script, but their hopes to bring it to the big screen for it to become another slash flick with bite will go unfulfilled. The lack of acting chops by the group of unknowns, the tight quarters of the setting and the even tighter film shots and dark imagery all combined make this a movie that is not worth watching.
