Who’s yo’ daddy? Coined a provocative thriller, Inalienable answers the age old dilemma about who the baby daddy is. Move over Maury! We now know!
Okay seriously. This is not a provocative thriller. I wouldn’t even call it science fiction. I am not a huge sci-fi fan, but I’d hazard a guess that true science fiction fans would not be happy with this movie falling into their genre. The film is not even rated…shocker! Directed by Robert Dyke, Inalienable was written by Walter Koenig of Star Trek fame. I suppose this could have been a well-written movie but there are so many cheesy lines and “oh come on” moments that it sinks the movie. (Koenig also plays a role in this film.) Here’s the rundown. Eric Norris, played by Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica), is a scientist at Fairfield Labs. A friend shows up with a rock. A pet rock? No. It’s an extraterrestrial rock. Poor Eric lost his wife and son in a tragic car accident years prior. He finally moves on with Amanda, a fellow scientist played by Courtney Peldon. But oops! They get pregnant. I know you’re wondering why they didn’t go to Plan B. Every Walgreens carries that oopsie pill right? But aha! This pregnancy snuck up on them, since it was Eric who got knocked up. Eric gives birth, with no epidural, and produces a new son with strange tentacles that look like churros coming out of its back. Oh, and the boy is extremely ugly. But that doesn’t stop the proud father from cooing, “You’re really something aren’t you?” before the government comes and snatches his pride and joy away from him. This is where I assumed the film would take on a science fiction-like spin, with experimentation and testing on the child that would reveal a whole new future for the world. Instead, a court battle ensues with Eric fighting for custody of his son. I’m serious. There are many great actors in this movie that any “Trekkie” would have a field day pointing out. However, I don’t think they were used to the best of their abilities. Even the extras in this movie are a joke. In one scene, a camera scans a heckling crowd, half of which are actors trying not to grin and giggle. The cover art and synopsis of Inalienable suggests that viewers will be shocked and intrigued by a science fiction/horror movie. They will be sorely disappointed. What they will see is a ridiculous look at the answer to the questions, “What would happen if a man gave birth…to an alien. Could we discover other life forms through this alien baby?” In the science fiction world, this movie would answer those questions. In this movie, however, it turns into a paternity court case. Should daddy be able to take care of his alien son since he essentially gave birth to this bouncy baby boy? If you want to know, you have to check out the movie. However, do yourself a favor and don’t. The answer to that question is not worth your viewing time. Best line of the movie: “I know there are aliens out there. How else would you explain Andy Kaufman or Jim Carrey?” Reviewer: Sharon Foss |
