Writer, director, special effects artist: why stop at being just one? In an industry crowded with people trying to “make it” and just get in it is just smart cookies to learn as much as you can and become talented in the many different aspects of creating entertainment. Yeah, I’m talking about the entertainment industry and we’re talking to filmmaker J.L. Barnett.
J.L. Barnett is a man on a mission to put the fright back into fright flicks. To bring back a detail that is often times missing as people try to turn a quick buck: awesomeness. A driving force in the latest special effects with IMP FX, Barnett is fully prepared to make the undead corpses of burn victims come back to life and set monsters loose on us all. You can see his effects work in movies such as The House That Jack Built and Albino Farm, as well as his own films in places such as Chiller Tv, with Bunny Time Cupcakes. To learn more about J.L. Barnett you’re going to have to stick with me here and read on, or if you’re ready to skip to the eye candy and get back to precious Myspace check J.L. Barnett out HERE Of course you’ll want to visit www.impfx.com as well to view the masters work and order a monster of your own. Q. Writer, director, special effects artist: which one really pulls your strings the most? “Directing enables me to pull in different skills such as special effects and writing. Being a writer helps me put the scene together and with a knowledge of special effects, filming FX scenes go smoother on set.” Q. Does IMP FX work with standard rates or can low budget Indie films sweet talk some deals? “Everybody sweet talks and I work with them to give them the best looking effects for their budget.” Q. On Albino Farm IMP FX created Pig Bitch, how long did it take to get that set up on the actor and what is the regimen for upkeep during shooting? “Pig Bitch was a three hour application process. Several silicone pieces overlapped onto a mechanical underskull that actress, Bianca Barnett wore. It pieces remained glued on for up to 12 hours at a time. Most of the upkeep was hair replacement due to her many stunts!” Q. What’s the story behind/with Bunny Time Cupcakes? “Bunny Time Cupcakes is a short I wrote and directed for NBC's Chiller tv horror station. They wanted horror themed short subjects to air Halloween night and I came up with a simple, yet terrifying concept. I wanted Bunny Time Cupcakes to be just over three minutes and have a monster to showcase my company's work.” Q. Please tell us all about Amphibimortis. “Amphibimortis is a horror film I'm directing in the swamps of South Carolina. I don't want to give too much away, but it's my answer to the weak horror films flooding the market. I just don't think they're scary enough and this is my opportunity to prove myself. Think Deliverance meets Pumpkinhead having dinner with the Evil Dead.” Q. The House That Jack Built, anything you can tell us about that? “It's a thriller ghost story directed by Bruce Reisman. I did a burn make up on actor Peter Onorati.” Q. What are some movies that in your opinion have great special effects? “Everything Dick Smith touched has great special effects. The Exorcist, Altered States and Scanners are highlights. Carpenter's The Thing and Randy Cook's work in The Gate are favorites.” Q. The best standard recipe for fake blood is… “Why use fake blood when you can get the real thing?” Q. Your dream horror movie would feature what three actors on the cast? “Lon Chaney SR., Boris Karloff and Mary Pickford.” Q. What are some things in the field of entertainment that you are looking forward to? “It seems 3D is making somewhat of a comeback. I'd love to direct a 3D horror feature!” - Wes Laurie |
