Films have taught us that any time bathing is involved with the woodlands it is less a bath and more like a my limbs have broken and I am floating down a river towards anal rape experience. The upcoming film “Backwoods Bloodbath” doesn’t screw around with us on the title and there’s isn’t no confusing it with one of those Playboy playmate’s dragging the washtub to some cute clearing video for soaping up and dancing. Okay, well maybe  I’m the only one who would think that sort of thing, but director Donn Kennedy was kind enough to make sure I knew the low-down on the film Backwoods Bloodbath.

At www.myspace.com/theblackhodag you can find out that the film is an old school gore flick about six friends who take a road trip to a back country town, where a local legend has been feeding off the population for decades. They find themselves the newest items on the menu as they are hunted by bogeyman-type creature known as “The Black Hodag.”

A big thank you goes out to Donn Kennedy for doing the following interview and to all that worked with him on the film for strivingthe_guts_of_the_shoot to make something entertaining for us horror fans. Hopefully when the movie is available for viewing most of us will get a chance to check it out.

TERRORTUBE: The film was known as 'The Black Hodag', is it officially staying at 'Backwoods Bloodbath' now?

'Yes. The official Title is ‘Backwoods Bloodbath: Curse of the Black Hodag’. We changed it to keep the creature more mysterious- Nightmare on Elm street isn’t called ‘Freddy’ and Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn’t called ‘Thomas ‘Leatherface’ Hewitt’. Etc.'

TERROR: I heard in another interview something about boobs and blood, what can we expect from Backwoods Bloodbath?

'There are a lot of direct-to-video horror films that can’t decide if they’re rated R or PG-13. I watched this one big foot film (won’t mention the name) and once it was over I couldn’t figure out what the hell I just watched. It wasn’t scary, or funny, or gory, or really anything. In our film we know exactly where we’re trying to take the audience, and that place is back to old school horror. What can you expect? Think American Pie in the woods where the pie eats the kids.'

TERROR: What film festivals or plans do you have for showing the movie?

'We have the world premiere at the Terror Film Festival in Philadelphia on Oct 22, then we’ll be showing at Full Moon Horror Film Festival the26th & have our Midwest premiere at the It Came From Lake Michigan Film Festival in Milwaukee on Oct 27th.'

TERROR: Could and will you tell us about some of your experiences working in the genre of horror?

'When I was 21 I packed up my truck, left film school & drove out to L.A.& worked for the Horror/Sci-fi company, The Aslyum. You can find their films in blockbuster. Love or hate what they make, you learn to shoot fast & cheap. I came back to Wisconsin with that guerilla-type knowledge: on a big film school student short, if an actor didn’t show up, they’d cancel the entire shoot for that day. On an Asylum shoot, they would pull a P.A. off a light stand and he’d be the star.'

TERROR: I understand you've directed music videos for some Wisconsin talent, any bands we might have heard of or will hear of?

'I hope you’ll hear of them. Some break up, etc. Kill Courtney is still together and rock’n the underground Milwaukee scene pretty hard- they tip their beer hats to Nirvana.

We have a ton of independent Milwaukee bands in our soundtrack: The Moon is Down, Anura, Salvage, & Flame shark.' HODAG_chase

TERROR: Will horror films be your main interest as a director, or do you have plans to branch out and make the next 'Gone With the Wind' or 'Good Luck Chuck'?

'I’m sticking with horror for a while. I’ll do Good Luck Chuck 2 in ten years if Dane Cook’s hair plugs don’t fall out by then.'

TERROR: What are some of your favorite movies?

'American History X, Hard boiled, The Bicycle Thief, & Tales from the Crypt’s: Demon Knight (I know, I’m all over the place). Ironically I’m not a huge fan of short films but I am obsessed with music videos. '

TERROR: Any advice for would be filmmakers?

'Shoot fast & shoot cheap. Anyone can call themselves a filmmaker- the difference is, can you shoot a feature in 12 days? Or does it take you6 months to finish your short? Do you need $50,000 to make a movie or can you be a wrecking ball & tear through red tape to get shit accomplished cheaper.'

TERROR: Has Myspace been a beneficial tool for you guys, or do you just get loonies and spam like the rest of us?

'Myspace is great. Who knew so many porn stars liked low-budget horror movies.'

TERROR: Any last words or dark behind the scenes secrets you can tell us or information about upcoming projects?

'Dark behind the scenes secrets, huh. One actor in the film is an actual stripper. Can you find him?

For upcoming projects, if we get distribution for this film, I’d like to up the scale & budget for the next film to be in the ‘8 Films to Die For’ showcase. I love that whole touring horror festival thing. '
