Interview with Corin Nemec

By Heather Wixson

In the early days of FOX TV, I was a huge fan of the show “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.”  The titular character, played by actor Corin Nemec, was the type of cool I always wanted to be.  After his Parker Lewis days, Nemec worked hard to shed the image of that role and showed his range as a performer working on projects like THE STAND, “Stargate SG-1,” and CHICAGO MASSACRE: RICHARD SPECK.

Nemec also played the lead in the recent release, SEA BEAST, and this week, Nemec is channeling his inner serial killer as Ted Bundy in AN AMERICAN ICON: TED BUNDY.  The Horror Chick had a chance to catch up with the former heart-throb who’s still working hard these days.

The Horror Chick:  Taking on the role of someone like Ted Bundy must have been a daunting task.  Can you tell me a bit about what you did to prepare to portray such a horrific figure?

Corin Nemec:  I actually didn’t have a lot of time to really prepare for BUNDY.  But I trusted in the strength Michael Feifer’s script so I knew that once I got it, I would be okay.  I did do some research on Ted and watched some films of him just to understand his mind.  There’d be these surreal moments in his interviews where the darkness would sneak out of him and that’s what I would use as my inspiration.

Ted had such a messed up childhood too, which is something I had no idea until I took this role.  I know he was his father’s son but it looks like he most likely wasn’t his mother’s child and probably a child of incest.  Can you imagine what that must have done to him? No wonder he turned out the way he did.  It’s hard to justify his level of insanity but I can understand where it came from now.

THC: Now this isn’t your first time playing a real-life monster since you also took on the role of Richard Speck.  Being from Chicago, he’s one of the more notorious figures I’ve ever really learned about that roamed our streets.  How messed up was it trying to get inside Speck’s brain?

CN:  I think being Richard Speck was the first time as an actor that I’ve ever really been disturbed by a character I was portraying.  About half-way through production, I realized I had to go to some really dark places and I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I really hate this guy.”

As an actor, I wanted to find the character traits to justify Speck’s actions but I never could. The guy never showed an ounce of remorse ever.  He was a guy that always thought he was going to beat the system.  The only time he fell apart was on his way to his execution—I honestly don’t think he thought he would ever get punished for what he did.

THC:  You were in one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations ever- THE STAND and you portrayed Harold Lauder.  Can you discuss what it was like to be asked to part of such a great ensemble piece?

CN:  I knew when I auditioned for THE STAND that I was being afforded the opportunity to be a part of not only a classic story but a cult classic film.  THE STAND happened about six months after “Parker Lewis” and people really only had seen me do comedy but everyone on that project believed that I could do something beyond that, and you couldn’t ask for more as an actor.

Working with Mick Garris and Stephen King was a huge moment in my career.  I didn’t feel like a lot of the industry believed in what I could do and those guys did, and they took a chance on me.

THC:  Now with SEA BEAST out and BUNDY coming out soon, what else do you have on your plate right now?

CN:  Well, the first season of “Parker Lewis” was just released so I am really excited about that.  In the US, I don’t think it’s been on the air since 1994 or something like that so it’s really cool to be able to have that out there for old fans and new fans alike.

I also run a production company with David Faustino and we currently run a web series called “STAR-ving” which stars the both of us as down-on-our-luck actors.  It airs on Crackle.com and the show has been a big success.  We’re hoping to get to do more with “STAR-ving” too.

BUNDY: AN AMERICAN ICON will hit DVD shelves on Tuesday, July 21st.
