They are not the victims, and even when they die they are in control of your attention. Nine out of ten times they kill off the monster, if they aren’t the monster themselves. I speak of: women in horror movies.

However, not just any woman can act in a horror film and actually call it acting. It takes a staggering degree of hard work as well as special talent. You will found massive batches of the talent-less who think popping out their titties and screaming “Look at these!,” is all it takes to gain true success and admiration. You will find many men who might agree, that is until their world gets rocked by the performance of the genre goddess we dub a “Scream Queen.”

One such real actress, popularly called “Hollywood’s Hottest Scream Queen” is Victoria De Mare; pronounce that D’Mar. In a short span of time she has managed to impress many and already can call herself a genre veteran. Personally, I saw her in Werewolf In A Women’s Prison and can vouch for how captivating her on-screen presence is, no matter the budget or subject matter. The true pulse of the horror genre does not generally beat within the larger studios of Hollywood, but rather in the Indie spectrum of things, where viewers can feel more appreciated and closer to the projects. Most people would be more than happy to get closer to Victoria De Mare, so eat your hearts out people: I got to interview her!

A special thanks to Victoria De Mare for taking part in the following interview and to Aine Leicht for helping make this happen. Everyone should be sure to check out Victoria’s IMDB page HERE to loyally keep up on what projects she will appear in. Also, you are going to want to check out her official site HERE.

TERRORTUBE: Some people say that horror movies are just one step up from porn movies, any thoughts on that statement?

“Wow! Who the hell says that? The people that think that obviously have no knowledge whatsoever of the two completely different products of film. Pornographic films are not mainstream films. They are one industry of themselves within the entertainment industry all together. They are centered around explicit and graphic sex only with the intentions of arousing the viewer usually without any story at all. Horror films are stories with characters being tortured and tormented by some kind of monster. The nudity and non-graphic sex in these films are just a standard formula of material that cult fan boys have come to look for and expect.”

TT: How did you get into the biz?

“My mother was a ballet dancer, so I began auditioning and performing at the age of six before I had ever even had any training, which began at the age of seven. At thirteen, I starred in my first short film.”

TT: Dancing or acting?

“Dancing and acting have gone hand in hand with me my entire life, so I will continue to do both until my body gives out and I can no longer dance. Then I will continue to work as an actor until they are wiping the drool off my face in my wheelchair.”

TT: Who would you say are some inspirational people in the fields of entertainment for you?

“My inspirations are Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem, Jack Nicholson, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, Marilyn Monroe, and Karen Carpenter just to name a few.”

TT: What does being a Scream Queen mean?

“Being a Scream Queen is an honor. It means to me that I have officially accomplished a significant level of recognition in my career by joining the many charismatic women in history before me who embody the most popular genre of film: horror.”

TT: What are some of the best horror movies?

“I think there are so many terrific horror movies, it is hard to say which ones are "some of the best", which would also be my opinion and might differ from another horror film fan's list. Horror films have always been my favorite genre of film since I was a little girl. Some of my favorites are 'The Exorcist', 'Jaws', 'Friday the 13th', 'Halloween', 'Pet Cemetary', and 'Scream' just to name a few.”

TT: In Werewolf In A Women’s Prison, the sweat licking scene, maybe you could give us some behind the scenes sort of perspective on what that was like.

“This was a very difficult scene to execute for everyone involved. It was extremely hot, windy, and uncomfortable. I didn't want this to turn into something that it was not. The girls were left in the middle of nowhere chained up, half naked, and basically left for dead. They were just trying to survive. It is a very mesmerizing scene in my opinion.”

TT: How do you pick what roles you take? An you would turn down immediately?

“I read the script and take into consideration who this girl is, what she is going through, and what she wants. I also take into consideration who I am working with on the project. That has become a huge factor for me as well. And, I would turn down a "porno" film immediately. That kind of work does not interest me at all.”

TT: Do you have any goals as far as expanding what types of movies you appear in or perhaps beyond acting, any directing/producing/ writing thoughts?

“My goals are many. I have a journal on my desk filled with lists of goals that I look at everyday, and I am extremely focused on accomplishing every one of them. It is February 13th, 2008 today and I have already booked 5 feature films so far this year, so this method of goal/list making seems to be very effective for me. I intend to continue to work on horror/thriller films, of course, but my experience although it has been primarily in horror, but certainly not limited to it. I have also worked on dramas, comedies, and sci-fi films as well. I look forward to working on more action/adventure films and period piece dramas. I don't have any aspirations to direct, and besides my published poetry, I don't have any aspirations to write screenplays. I am currently producing a live morning talk show that airs on the Sky Channel, which is distributed in the UK only, as well as in post-production on a film I produced, which is not horror, titled 'Amazing Grace, Loving Gram Parsons.”

TT: Is Hollywood evil?

“To some it can be.”

TT: What are some upcoming projects we’ll get to see you in?

“'Werewolf In A Women's Prison', 'Deadly Beloved', 'Bio Slime', 'Shadows'(currently in Thailand, coming domestic), 'Psychon Invaders'(currently in Japan, coming domestic), 'Stolen Moments of September', 'Diary Of A Serial Killer', 'Ralphie', just to name a few. I currently have 15 feature films awaiting release and many more on my slate to follow.”

TT: If a fan wants an autographed photo how can they get one?

“Go to my website: www.screamqueendemare.com and send me an autograph request to my Fan Club address.”

TT: Any advice for aspiring actresses?

“Know really deep down in your heart and soul why you want to write "actor" on any official paperwork that asks for your profession. It is not all glitz and glamour. It is a job. It is extremely difficult to succeed on any level and most people will not take you seriously.”
