LAID TO REST Review

By Heather Wixson

I like my horror in many forms: I like creature features, I can’t get enough of zombie flicks, I love the intellectual offerings that come around oh so randomly these days, but what is true is that I am a huge lover of slasher flicks.  For me, the chase and the gore is a different level of fun and frankly, I’ve been jonesing for a decent new slasher to come along since HATCHET.

Well, kids, it’s time for you to meet ChromeSkull from LAID TO REST because this guy is definitely ready to play in the big leagues.

In LAID TO REST, we start off with a hot chick in a coffin (sounds like an average Saturday night to me) played by Bobbi Sue Luther, who has no idea who she is, where she is, and why she’s been stuffed into a coffin.

All of a sudden, she catches a glimpse of a shadowy figure dressed in all black and the only definitive thing about this person is a chrome mask shaped like a skeleton that he wears on his face alongside a video camera perched to his shoulder.

We suddenly see that this guy is up to no good- and by no good, that means coming after our “mystery girl” and killing anyone that gets in his path.

Slasher flicks these days are a tricky bunch.  They can either fall too far one way and become a “torture porn” film and if they fall the other way, they risk being stale and a total rip-off.

Writer/Director Robert Hall does a great job of knowing just who his audience for LAID TO REST is and doesn’t try to pander to the artsy crowds with trying to give us a sob story about who our killer is and what motivates him.  I love a killer with unexplained motives myself.

For LAID TO REST, Hall is happy just giving us a relentless and creative killer as well as some badass, gorelicious kills scenes that definitely will leave the gorehounds out there happy.  I really wish the guys who made the FRIDAY THE 13th redux would have talked to Hall to get some ideas on creative ‘kills’ because he certainly delivers them.

There’s also some fun cameos by Johnathon Schaech (QUARANTINE) and Sean Whalen (the “Got Milk?” guy who’s been in EVERYTHING) tossed in there too for good measure.

LAID TO REST isn’t without its minor flaws, as sometimes the movie had a bit of a pacing or tone problems (just got a little too serious here and there but I will contend it is nice to have characters you care about again). They really are so minor that I really don't think you will find a better slasher film this year.

LAID TO REST will be hitting DVD shelves on April 21st courtesy of the fine people at Anchor Bay Entertainment.  Check out the official site here.
