NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY Review

by Heather Wixson

Starring Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Wes Craven, Robert Shaye, Sara Risher, John Saxon
Directed by Daniel Farrands & Andrew Kasch

It's almost hard for this writer to believe that it's been almost 26 years since the first time Freddy Krueger ever graced the big screen, but with almost three decades behind us now and a remake recently released, the timing was right to take a trip down Elm Street and explore horror's most beloved franchise with NEVER SLEEP AGAIN.

Narrated by NIGHTMARE's ultimate final girl, Heather Langenkamp, this four hour documentary is chock full of every single thing you would ever want to know about any of the NIGHTMARE films, from the original up through 2003s FREDDY VS. JASON.

Filmmakers Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch (as well as writer Thommy Hutson) leave no stone unturned- from how the original almost bankrupted New Line Cinema to the sexual tones of the second, the insanity of working without a script on THE DREAM MASTER, even through what went wrong with FREDDY'S DEAD.  In fact, if I went through the juicy bits of the entire documentary, you'd need four hours to read this review.

What struck me most that even with a four hour running time (and four hours of bonus features too), NEVER SLEEP AGAIN never drags.  There's not a missed beat in the entire documentary.  While clearly a love letter to the die hard fans of the franchise, NEVER SLEEP AGAIN is still accessible enough for general viewers who may just be looking for something to watch as well.

With music created by Charles Bernstein (original NIGHTMARE composer), cover art by Joseph Peak (who made the iconic first cover art for the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), and beautiful stop-motion animation sequences by Travis Prow, NEVER SLEEP AGAIN hits on every note with painstaking attention to detail.

While I won't go specifically into each of the special features, let's just say that this four hours is by far the most enjoyable bonus content I've ever watched, especially when they start talking about the music used in the franchise (hello Dokken fans!).  It includes:

  • Extended Interviews
  • First Look: Heather Langenkamp's
    "I Am Nancy"
  • For the Love of the Glove
  • Fred Heads: The Ultimate Freddy Fans
  • Horror's Hallowed Grounds: Return To Elm Street
  • Freddy vs. The Angry Video Game Nerd
  • Expanding the Elm Street Universe: Freddy in Comic Books & Novels
  • The Music of the Nightmare: Conversations with Composers & Songwriters
  • Elm Street's Poster Boy: The Art of Matthew Joseph Peak
  • A Nightmare On Elm Street in 10 Minutes
I know there have been a lot of documentaries released for some horror's favorite franchises, but you'll be hard pressed to ever find anything that even comes close to the quality of NEVER SLEEP AGAIN.  The bar has been officially raised by Farrands and Kasch with NEVER SLEEP AGAIN and I doubt you'll ever see the likes of a horror documentary as thorough and candid as this one for generations to come.
