PIRANHA 3D
by Heather Wixson

Starring Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Steven R. McQueen, Jessica Szohr, Kelly Brook, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer, Christopher Lloyd

Directed by Alexandre Aja

Let me preface this review by saying that I never in a million years would have thought that director Alex Aja, the man who gave horror fans HIGH TENSION, THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake or even MIRRORS, would be the guy to helm PIRANHA, but for an unconventional choice, I now think he was the perfect guy to bring gorey fun back into theaters this summer.

PIRANHA 3D starts off with some wicked underwater seismic activity that unleashes a ravenous school of blood-thirsty piranha into the waters of a Spring Break tourist trap and it's up to a local sheriff (Shue) and an unlikely group of survivors to find a way to fend off these killer fish before all that's left of Spring Break are bloody beaches and half-eaten co-eds.

Beyond that, there is no plot.  Does that matter? Nope.  PIRANHA 3D is about the scenery here, kids, and there is plenty.  Hot guys, topless girls, lots of blood, and some insanely tense underwater scenes are what makes PIRANHA 3D so much fun.  Even a cameo by horror maestro Eli Roth almost feels like dessert after you have dessert- you just can't get enough.

Now, is the movie perfect? Far from it.  It's a SyFy original movie with a budget but as a fan, you know that going into the flick and as long as you can embrace that, you're good.  What's great though, is that despite it's obvious B-movie feeling, PIRANHA 3D is still a well-acted film and none of the actors here (even Richard Dreyfuss who has a cameo hearkening to his JAWS days) treats the movie like they're slumming it.  Jerry O'Connell pretty much steals the movie too as over-the-top WILD WILD GIRLS producer Derrick Jones who has some of the best scenes in the movie (and gives fans a look at his "man parts" via 3D even).

What I will say about PIRANHA 3D though is that if you can catch the flick in 2D, do that and skip the extra money for 3D.  The fact is that no matter how hard studios try, you just cannot deliver a 3D conversion that will truly feel like a 3D movie, the way THE FINAL DESTINATION or MY BLOODY VALENTINE did.  There's some pretty layering going on, but in the end, it's still not up to par.  I liked that the filmmakers wanted to give fans something extra for their theater-going experience, but 3D conversion was not the way to go on this.

Overall, is PIRANHA silly, gratuitous, over-the-top and by far the goriest thing to hit theaters in a long time? Definitely.  Which makes it all the more fun for anyone who loves horror and loves having some fun in the genre.  APOCALYPSE NOW, it isn't and for this writer, I wouldn't have it any other way.
