SEA BEAST Review
by Heather Wixson You know, I've come to expect very little from the "Maneater" DVD series as they generally are hokey sci-fi flicks with bad CG effects. So, when I got SEA BEAST in the mail, I really didn't expect much from it at all (even though the box cover is pretty sweet). So, how did the sea yarn measure up against it's predecessors? Read on to find out. SEA BEAST stars Corin Nemec ("Parker Lewis Can't Lose," "Stephen King's The Stand") as Will McKenna, a single-father fisherman who loses one of his cast mates on a doomed fishing voyage. Upon his return to his small New England town, he begins to realize that he might have brought more back then just some empty nets-- something far more sinister and deadly. What Will brought back ends up being an amphibious fish creature that can stun its prey with a venomous spit that allows it to then devour whatever lays in its path. The creature is part Predator/part The Host/part Audrey II and what is a bit disappointing from a movie called SEA BEAST is that most of the film takes place on land. Par for the course, SEA BEAST delivers up the usual hokey performances, although Nemec (doing his best Heath Ledger look-alike work here) actually is pretty decent in the flick. The rest of the cast is atrocious and if I am subjected to another "hot marine biologist" in a sci-fi film, I might throw up (come on, they all can't look like they should be on "America's Next Top Model!"). SEA BEAST does have some redeeming moments as I do love campy movies from time to time, but overall, it's a pretty unforgettable voyage. If you don't have anything better to watch, then I say go ahead and set sail with SEA BEAST. Otherwise, save your time and your money. Rating: 1 1/2 out 5 stars |
