Sorority Row
Ahhhh, sorority sisters, how I loathe thee. Oh I mean love, love thee. The reason I wanted to see Sorority Row was not because I felt that this slasher flick would rise above all others. No. I wanted to see sorority sisters murdered. It makes me giggle. Oh and did I mention that chick from MTV’s The Hills gets murdered? Double giggle. I figured this movie would just be another “girls in college having pillow fights and getting killed off” movie. But screenplay writers Josh Stolberg, Pete Goldfinger and Mark Rosman actually put together a smart, funny slasher flick and for that alone, this movie is worth watching. A sorority prank goes bad…and bloody. Theta Pi sisters Ellie, Chugs, Claire, Jessica Megan and Cassidy play a prank on Garrett, who also is Chug’s brother, because he cheated on Megan (played by The Hill’s Audrina Partridge). But, such as these movies go in the sorority world, the prank goes too far and-whoops-we lose a sister! But that’s okay! Theta Pi sisters stick together. And together, they cover up the death and pass off their sister as a missing person. As they say, the show must go on. The school year ends with the girls graduating but suddenly they start receiving threatening text messages. Back in the day, they would have received a note in the mail or a slashed tire with some key scratches in the side of the car, but these days your life will get threatened via cell phone. Times…they are a changin’! People start dying and you begin to wonder who the killer could be. The dead sorority sister’s own flesh and blood sister who shows up to pledge the house? Or the crazy house mother, played by Carrie Fisher, who’s a bit creepy? The movie is worth watching until the end to find out! The sorority girls are led by Jessica, played by a sinister future-seeking Leah Pipes (Angel, Terminator: The Sarah Connors Chronicles). Her sorority sisters include Rumer Willis (The House Bunny), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2), Jamie Chung (Real World) and Margo Harshman (Fired Up). It’s a strong female cast of somewhat unknown actresses who play the snotty sisters very well…they’re smart, they’re beautiful, they’re vindictive and they’re scared. There are some fun features on the DVD, including Sorority Secrets: Stories From the Set, which is a surface level behind-the-scenes look into the movie, hosted by the ladies of the sorority. The actresses all ooze sweetness and love toward each other as they talk about how awesome the others are. And that is the Sorority Secret apparently. Killer 101 actually is a TRUE behind-the-scenes look with snippets from the screenwriters talking about the anatomy of a slasher flick. Kill Switch actually takes you directly to each kill in the movie. Don’t want to watch the movie but want to watch each murder? Get to the special features menu and just choose Kill Switch. It’s kind of sick to only want to see the murders…but I won’t judge you. The DVD also includes Deleted Scenes that include an alternate ending, and outtakes. Best line of the movie: “Easy there Lezzy Lohan.” - Sharon Foss |
