SPLINTER Review
By Heather Wixson The positive buzz about Toby Wilkins’ film SPLINTER had been making the rounds on the internet for some time now. So, imagine my delight when I finally got to catch a screening of the movie myself. What was even better is that it completely lived up to the hype. Starring Shea Whigham (LORDS OF DOGTOWN), Paulo Costanzo (TV’s “Joey”), Jill Wagner (“Blade: The Series”), and newcomer Rachel Kerbs, SPLINTER is about a young couple on the run (Whigham and Kerbs) who end up taking another young couple (Costanzo and Wagner) on a romantic anniversary getaway hostage. While amidst the stressful hostage situation, the foursome come across a strange biological parasite that invades its host and makes its bloodlust relentless. They flee to a remote gas station where they unknowingly come across the parasite that has invaded a human host with deadly results. Suddenly, the survivors have to figure out a way to make it out of the gas station and to get to safety without the parasitic entities noticing. In terms of the gore, Quantum Creation FX did a bang-up job with their parasitic creatures and one very intense arm severing sequence. There were a few moments that even had me wincing and that isn’t easy these days. The plot itself seems basic enough but Wilkins packs in enough emotional intensity and character development to make the SPLINTER not only horrifying and suspenseful, but also compelling in terms of human drama. The film reminded me of John Carpenter’s The Thing and I can tell you that Wilkins has a promising future ahead of him. SPLINTER is set for DVD and Blu-Ray release on April 14th. If you have the Sci-Fi Channel HD, you can check it out there on March 21st. For more information on SPLINTER, click here or watch the trailer below: |
