Swamp Devil
I was hesitant to watch Swamp Devil due to the name alone, and the Horror Chick can verify that since she handed me the movie four weeks ago and it took me that long to finally watch it. But I saw on the DVD sleeve that it won a few awards at the Philadelphia Terror Film Festival, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m not familiar with the film fest, but hey, it won for Audience Favorite so I thought maybe, just maybe, it’d be worth the hour and a half. The movie, directed by David Winning, begins with cleavage-bearing Lisa being dragged into the town’s swamp by what I presume to be the Swamp Devil. (I will capitalize the Swamp Devil due to its obvious importance.) Melanie Blaime, played by Cindy Sampson, has been away from her hometown of Gibbington for a “long time” and returns to town with the assumption that her father is dying. Estranged from him, she thinks it’s her last time to make things right. However, an old school friend she doesn’t remember, Jimmy played by Nicolas Wright, asks her to return because her father is wanted for the murder of Lisa. The movie continues into the plot of the hunted Howard Blaime, played by Bruce Dern, on the run for murder. While obviously the viewers know that the Swamp Devil is the culprit, the movie keeps you enthralled into the mystery of the creature, as well as the mystery behind Jimmy. The best part arrives 25 minutes into the movie when you actually get to see what the Swamp Devil looks like. My reaction was a mix of squinty-eyed amazement and a verbal reaction of “Shut the hell up,” but you have to see it for yourself. I was impressed that a movie with such an unfortunate name actually wasn’t that bad. I’d even go so far as saying it was worth watching. Take the 90 minutes to check it out, even if only to see the Swamp Devil for yourself. But in the future, whoever has the job of naming movies needs to be a bit more creative and think about the viewing impact it could, or could not, have on a film. Best line of movie: “You are one ugly mother fucker!” Reviewer: Sharon Foss |
