THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE) Review

by Heather Wixson

Starring Dieter Laser, Akihiro Kitamura, Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie
Written and Directed by Tom Six

There are some movies you just can never un-see.  THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE is one of them.

If you haven't heard of this indie sensationalist film that is storming the horror community with it's chatter, then let me bring you up to speed. Don't worry- I'll be gentle.

Two American girls (Williams, Yennie) are traveling in Germany and on their way, they get a flat tire on a remote road in the middle of nowhere (feel like you've seen this before?).  While trying to locate help because their cell phones have no signal, they come across the house of a brilliant surgeon (Laser), who has deadly plans for the duo.  He plans to fashion them, along with a kidnapped tourist (Kitamura), into the first ever "human centipede"- three people joined together through their gastric system.  The horrors that unfold for the trio are almost beyond comprehension.

The thing is, with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE, if you can get past the premise, the movie itself isn't terrible.  It looks great and Six is definitely a director (who also penned the script) on the rise.  To take such a bold step with this film is the mark of someone who isn't looking to play by any one's rules in their career and I do applaud him for that.

What were weak points in THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE was the narrative of the film as well as some pretty big logic issues in the third act involving police who visit the surgeon's home and even with sound reason for suspicion, they still leave.  It almost took me out of the film completely (which is saying a lot since it's taken me several days just to write my review) but the final moments of the film brought me right back in.

I guess the question here really is whether or not there is any merit for THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE.  I understand that the movie is being marketed as "medically accurate" but there are a lot of horrific things that are medically accurate- do they warrant feature films as well?  I don't know if I am the person qualified to answer that question, but in my opinion- not really.

>What I can say is that Laser is one of the more dominant villains in recent years and if you are brave enough to view THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE, his face is one that you won't forget for a long time.  His performance was truly disturbing.

Overall, THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE isn't a terrible movie but it's not a great movie either.  The first film in what is set to be a trilogy from writer/director Six, it will be interesting to see what lengths the director will go to in the subsequent films because this FIRST SEQUENCE is pretty audacious and unsettling.
