THE WOLFMAN Unrated Blu-Ray Review
by Heather Wixson Starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Guy Pierce Directed by Joe Johnston When THE WOLFMAN came out in theaters this past winter, it was met with very mixed responses. Overall, this writer liked a lot of what they tried to accomplish but an uncomfortable-looking cast and no real exposition took me out my viewing experience almost entirely. At that point, I would have given the movie a 2 out 5 stars. However, now we have THE WOLFMAN Unrated on Blu-Ray boasting a slew of goodies. Will it surpass the theatrical version and make it up to a lot of unsatisfied fans? The answer is maybe. While the unrated version of THE WOLFMAN is definitely an improvement over the theatrical version, the movie still ends up falling flat to me mostly due to what seems like forced performances by Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. Even the usually entertaining Emily Blunt seems like she'd rather be working on a Troma film than be on screen with Del Toro. However, where the movie falls short, the Blu-Ray special features almost make up for it. This is a must have for fans, even if you don't intend on watching the movie again. Some of the featurettes, including "Return of the Wolfman," "Werewolf Legacy, Lore and Legend," and "The Beast Maker" featuring Rick Baker, were just inspired and fascinating viewings for fans. The alternate endings were interesting but nothing you haven't seen before in the 'alternate ending' arena. What is the coup de gras for THE WOLFMAN Blu-Ray release is the fact that for the first time ever, fans can stream the original 1941 classic THE WOLF MAN through BD Live and trust me, if it's technology you aren't that familiar with, it's time to learn it because it's worth the hassle. Fans will not be disappointed as I doubt you'll ever see Lon Chaney Jr. looking this great again. There's no doubt that Universal put a lot of care into their Blu-Ray release of THE WOLFMAN, however I just wish they would have put as much detail into the release of the actual film. Unrated Movie: 2.5 out 5 stars Bonus Features: 4 out of 5 stars |
