Terrance Zdunich Carries on Independent Spirit with The Molting

By Heather Wixson

If you need proof that writer/actor/singer Terrance Zdunich is the embodiment of the independent spirit, just watch the film REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA.

A story that he co-created with Darren Smith, nothing about REPO! seems manufactured at all- an intricate story that weaves together the tale of  a future where an epidemic has made it necessary to lease out human organs, a greedy family that will send out Repo Men to repossess those organs, and at the heart of it all- a complicated father/daughter relationship.

So it makes perfect sense that when it came time for Zdunich to move on to his next project, he wasn’t going to settle for creating something on anyone else’s terms. That’s why for “The Molting,” the graphic novel series that is making its debut on September 15th.

“The Molting,” which Zdunich wrote and illustrated, was an idea that Zdunich had for a long time. It wasn’t until he was working on REPO! that he decided it was time to move forward with his story.

“I started writing The Molting about a year ago but I had wanted to tell the story for a long time,” explained Zdunich. “I worked on the script in between all the REPO! road tours. Stylistically, it’s like Repo- dark and hopefully the type of thing those fans and new ones will really dig.”

The entire series of “The Molting” essentially centers around Anaheim, California in the 90s.  The story centers around the contrast of a dysfunctional family living right outside Disney- “the happiest place on Earth.”  In the first issue, “Guilty Susie,” we are introduced to a pair of orphans whose actions several decades earlier set off a series of events that will have repercussions felt throughout the entire series of “The Molting.”

When Zdunich decided to proceed with his graphic novel idea, he toyed with the idea of approaching major publishers to distribute his work.  However, he ultimately decided that if he really wanted to keep artistic control, he needed to handle the distribution himself.

Zdunich said, “At first I thought I would see what would happen in terms of the success of REPO!. I figured I would have the script and a few drawings so I could shop it around to find a distributor.  Now, because of my experience with REPO!, it didn’t seem the right way to put ‘The Molting’ out.”

“I didn’t want to focus on selling my idea- I wanted to put my energy into creating it. If it can be successful through self-distribution, then that’s an amazing feat.  Plus, I am not selling away my rights so this will always remain my work. I love being able to be self-sufficient,” added Zdunich.

Another reason behind Zdunich’s decision to self-distribute “The Molting” is the fact that the internet is changing the landscape for everything in terms of putting any sort of medium into the hands of fans.

“I think the publishing industry has changed,” explained Zdunich. “Of course, it would be nice to have my finished comic book in every bookstore but I imagine in the next 5 years there’s not going to be too many bookstores left. So, to jump on the Titanic (so to speak) isn’t the best idea- at least for me.”

“REPO! has a die-hard fan base and I think a lot of them will be interested in what I am doing with ‘The Molting.’  Now, granted, it’s my job to keep them interested so if the product sucks, then that’s all on me,” Zdunich added.

The Molting goes on sale exclusively through Zdunich’s website at www.terrancezdunich.com on Tuesday, September 15th.  You can find out more about the series specifically at www.themoltingcomic.com

Zdunich, who is no stranger to road tours to promote his work, is planning to take Guilty Susie on tour so that he can meet fans and give them a taste of the new world he created up close and personal.

One of his first stops will be at the LA Repo Shadowcast (featuring ATTK) on Friday, September 25th at the Beverly Fairfax Theater (7907 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles).

Zdunich will be there signing issues of Guilty Susie for fans before the show, which starts at midnight.
