Horror movie trends just come crashing in wave after wave and I swear it looks like cannibals might be surfing on the next one. I guess cannibals give us elbow room for more intelligence when compared to zombies, but I’ll be damned if I wasn’t penning my own cannibal based script. Naturally though I’m not just creating some generic cannibal plot and I’m shutting up here before I let the ninjas out of the bag or start self-promoting. Why bring up cannibals then? Well because director Xavier Gens is being considered a cutting edge director in the horror genre having gained much critical acclaim for the bloody feature Frontier(s), and amongst loads of other features in the pipe featuring the human flesh-eaters he appears to be bringing one of his own . This French director also put in work on the video game to film adaptation Hitman coming to theatres, but our interest today is a report by MovieHole that Gens next project is lined up to be entitled: Vanikoro. Vanikoro is about some guys shipwrecked on an island full of cannibals. Hopefully Gens is a good surfer and this wave comes in fully entertaining and perhaps with lots of body parts floating in blood.
Perhaps cannibals and zombies, and vampires and yadda yadda boogey-boo will never get old, as long as plots stay fresh these genre staples are not traveling a dead end road. However, in other news the film Neighborhood Watch is apparently now at a Dead End. Or at least it is now titled “Dead End.” The film in question was directed by Graeme Whifler and made the festival rounds a couple of years back. There seemed to be some positive reaction from audiences, but apparently this story about a couple moving on to a new street and being tortured by a weird neighbor was not hot enough to land a distribution deal. In steps Lunatic Releasing which is bringing the film to Dvd in an unrated version packed with special features, but not the original title. Sometimes to be original you need to look to the classics, odd statement, but not as odd as a new mix of film characters being created by director Timothy Friend. His website www.bcvdmovie.com says that we can expect: “Bonnie and Clyde vs. Dracula” in 2008. In the movie Bonnie and Clyde are on the run from the law and take shelter in a mansion only to find the creepy owner has Dracula in his basement. How fun does that sound?! The trailer indeed makes it look as kooky as it sounds and yet with genre fav Tiffany Shepis taking the role of Bonnie and Trent Haaga delivering some solid lines in the clips, it might just be a cult hit. Filming looks to have been done in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The original movie Halloween is considered a classic and the Godfather of the slasher genre, and actor Tony Moran was a part of that film as the unmasked version of Michael Myers. Moran is taking on a new acting role as the King of Archangels in the new Mark Poole film “Requiem For the Fallen”, which is being promoted as a mix of Blade Runner meets Constantine with the visual style of 300 meets Underworld. If that doesn’t interest you maybe the fact that Playboy Sexcetera and all around nudie model Alex Del Monacco is also starring with Moran in the feature. The writer’s strike currently plaguing Hollywood has, as word would have it, slowed the production of the new Wolfman movie amongst many other projects. Also it would appear that the Castle Wolfenstein video game horror adaptation is also halted because Roger Avary is throwing his support to the striking writers and the film’s script is not quite finished. I’ll currently support the writers strike by halting all typing on this article. - Wes Laurie |
