Baghead is the name of a movie that sold at Sundance for an undisclosed amount being stated as low to mid 6 figures. It is not a horror movie, though it has been reported as such by some sources and does indeed have some connections to horror movies. What it seems to be is a movie about romantic relationships between people, in this case four actors who get together at a cabin to write a screenplay. The more drunk they get the more lame their ideas get and from one of their nightmares is born the serial killer Baghead for their movie. However, it seems someone with a paper bag on his head starts stalking them for real. Basically it is being stated that this movie is a satire on Indie filmmaking and cliché horror plot ideas or in a round about way one could say it is making fun of someone who would be stupid enough to write a screenplay about a killer with a paper bag on his head. Or: me.
I’ll interject myself into the news like Stephen Colbert does on Comedy Central with his comedy news show; except I’m not funny. Before I knew anything about this other Baghead I indeed wrote a comedy script of the same title and featuring a killer with a paper bag on his head. Currently it is being considered for production by some folks in Canada. The screenplay has been called “John Waters meets the Toxic Avenger” and was written perhaps to be filmed exploitation style with gore, nudity, and a funny B-movie sense of awareness. Now the question is, does this other Baghead making fun of people who write such things steal the thunder of an actual horror project involving a killer with a paper bag on his head (no holes) or does it help build some humorous intrigue? Hopefully it will end up being for horror fans to decide if my script actually gets in front of the camera. The Baghead film already made is expected to get some theatrical dates in Summer 2008, thanks to Sony Pictures Classic, before coming to DVD. - Wes Laurie |
