"The Walking Dead" Season One Blu-Ray

Starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Emma Bell, Iron E Singleton, Michael Rooker

I was probably one of the very few people who actually missed AMC's The Walking Dead when it hit the airwaves last fall so I was ready to be dazzled by The Walking Dead and for the most part, I wasn't let down.

For those unfamiliar with the story of "The Walking Dead", at its core is the story of Sherriff's Deputy Rick Grimes (Lincoln) who gets shot down in the line of duty and is hospitalized in a coma. He awakens weeks (a la 28 DAYS LATER) later to find that the world he knows is now gone- somehow the world has been overrun by zombies and the "walkers" have left the living running for their lives and piles of bodies in their wake.

A desperate Rick heads home to check on his wife (Callies) and son (Riggs), who are nowhere to be found and that's where "The Walking Dead" story takes off- now, it's about Rick's journey to find his family and make sense of the world that is crumbling around him. Similar in tone to Stephen King's "The Stand" mini-series, Rick of course meets many different survivors along his journey and faces off with the hordes of the undead too.

This first season (which is a brief six episodes) for the most part kept me entranced as I devoured the whole season in one sitting.  The cast assembled by show producer Frank Darabont is an excellent example of a perfect ensemble cast.  The story lines for the first six episodes were pretty standard but I think it's a great set up for what looks to be a bigger season two of "The Walking Dead."  There's a lot of questions that still have yet to be unanswered and with danger at every turn, you never know which character is going to meet an untimely fate.  I like that kind of gamble when I'm watching "my stories."

In terms of bonus material, "The Walking Dead" Blu-Ray release is chock full of awesomeness for fans, even if it is lacking in any sort of commentaries from those involved with the series.  I can forgive that this time around especially since both the The Making-of "The Walking Dead" featurette and The Behind-the-Scenes Zombie Make-Up Tips featurette make up for it and then some.  And when you've got a zombie series that involves a legendary FX master like Greg Nicotero involved, it's only right to give the man's work some attention.

Overall, while I enjoyed "The Walking Dead" and found the cast assembled to be near pitch perfect, it's the storytelling for that felt like it might have been the weak link in the chain here.  There were a lot of emotional moments that felt a little forced, but I am absolutely willing to forgive it as it can be a daunting task establishing so many different characters and story arcs for an hour-long weekly television series.  The power of what Darabont was able to establish for this first season was enough to ensure I'll be tuning in when season two comes back later this year.
